La Spezia lays at the centre of the Poets' Gulf, which stretches from Portevenere and its isles, to the castle of Lerici.
The town's origins are to be found in the roman town of Lunea, long the Magra river. Though, the town itself played a significant role only since the Fieschi supremacy of the Genoa Republic and the rule of Napoleon I. In the 19 th century La Spezia became the bathing resort of the Italian royal family and rapidly increased its military importance which culminated with the construction of the Military Naval Dockyard by Domenico Chiodo in 1869. La Spezia has been a military town until 1990s and is now becoming an important tourist centre.
A wonderful place where you can spend your holidays shopping or simply watching the towns attractions.
