Il Centro is in the very heart of La Spezia.
Via Prione and Corso Cavour are the main shopping streets in La Spezia, which branch into old narrow streets, full of shops and cultural centres such as the Museo Lia (Museum of Ancient and Medieval Arts), Museo del Sigillo ( Museum of the Seal, hosting the seals donated by the Cappellini family), Museo Diocesano (Diocesan Museum) and the Museo dei Trasporti (Transport Museum).
The 13 th century St. George Castle (Castello di S. Giorgio) protects the town from its hills and is currently hosting the Museo Civico Archeologico "Ubaldo Formentini", where you can admire the pre-historical Lunigiana stone statues.
The CAMEC (Centre for Modern and Conteporary Arts) is in the newly restored Piazza Cesare Battisti and hosts important permanent and temporary modern art exhibitions. A few minutes walk from there, you'll find the Museo Navale (Navy Museum). Walking through the oldest part of the town (il Poggio), you will get to Sant'Agostino square, a quiet place where you can have a tasteful coffee while watching to the wonderful baroque residences. After a short walk through Via del Torretto, you will get in Piazza Verdi. Here, you can visit the Palazzo delle Poste, which contains the futurist mosaic by Fillia and Prampolini.
